When Stella McKenzie is summoned to meet her Great Aunt Bess, her grandmother's sister, on the occasion of that lady's 100th birthday, she keeps the appointment with a great deal of trepidation. All her life she has been told about this mysterious lady, to whom her grandmother has not spoken since the First World War. She has been told that she is mean and spiteful, that she wrecked the engagement of her sister to the man she loved out of spite and jealousy. Stella could hardly have guessed the secrets the old lady was about to reveal, secrets she had kept for 75 years, secrets she does not intend should die with her. During one long and unforgettable day, Stella learns the real history of the family, not the version she has been taught. She learns about the lies and misconceptions of the past, she learns about a lost love and a passion which overruled everything else to end in tragedy.

The Romany Princess (Audible Audio Edition) Margaret Brazear Virginia Ferguson Books

If you like historical novels ( as opposed to "bodice-rippers"), this is an engaging story of a family over a lifetime. Poor, working class Londoners had a rough go of it in the Victorian era, and it was not much better after WWI. A100-year old woman, the last survivor of her generation, requests a meeting with a great niece she's never met, to tell the family stories held secret for nearly a century. Very well written, and kept me involved the whole time, even as I uttered, "Oh, no!" from time to time.

The Romany Princess (Audible Audio Edition) Margaret Brazear Virginia Ferguson Books Reviews

This was a terrific story with many characters who came to life for me. I can see Judi Dench playing the aged aunt, Bess. The only negative I have is that there are many typos - and this time I started to bookmark and make note of them after awhile. It is much nicer to read a story that has been adequately proofread.
When I browsed and found this book, I was unsure about the author. This is the first book I have read written by Margaret Brazear but definitely want to read more of her books. She has a unique talent that holds you from page to page. You can't wait to see what the next page will bring to the lives of the characters.
I've not read anything quite like The Romany Princess and certainly feel fortunate I'd taken the time. Margaret Brazear's method proved endearing as she depicts in detail a centenarian's tale of lives wronged in love and slight. It's assuredly recommended.
Very good read.
This was an excellent story of real life, of humans meddling in one another's lives and the consequences.
The book also shows how society has changed in the lifespan of the main character and how attitudes toward certain issues are so much more relaxed now.
Loved the story and kept my interest and interesting characters.
The Romany Princess is not just a romance. It is a tale of mystery and family. The characters draw you in and keep you reading.
